According to the Kentucky State Police in Pikeville, emergency crews in Pike Co had to rescue a man who had jumped into the Tug Fork River to escape Police.
KSP Troopers said they received a call around 6 AM Thursday about a man stealing a purse from a car that was parked at Appalachian Tobacco in the Belfry community of Pike Co.
When Troopers arrived at the scene they located the man, identified as Mark J. Hatfield, 32 and when they attempted to arrest him, a fight ensued for a few minutes and Hatfield got away and went over the creekbed and jumped into the river.
Hatfield was found a short time later on railroad tracks in West Virginia by authorities in Mingo Co, W.Va.
KSP says Hatfield was taken to Williamson Memorial Hospital for medical attention, but he reportedly passed away Thursday afternoon while being treated for exposure.
Hatfield’s body has been taken to the Medical Examiner’s office in Frankfort for an autopsy.
